Enterprise and Innovation for the Environment: Capacity Building for Asia – Europe
Youths on Sustainable Development
Congratulations to YPD Cambodia for all the work done organising the YPD Annual Training from July 14th to 22nd, 2007 in Phnom Penh, Kampong Chhnang and Siem Reap.
The training programme on Enterprise and Innovation for the Environment: Capacity Building for Asia – Europe Youths on Sustainable Development, hosted by Cambodia in July 2007 was a great success! Around 60 participants coming from 14 different countries from Asia and Europe attended our programme. Some new countries were introduced to the YPD network, like Philippines, Sweden, Holland, and Laos, hopefully some new chapter will appear very soon!
During the immersion programme in Phnom Penh participants have been seperated into 3 different groups to share about 3 different innovation for environment :
on renewable energy
on improved char briquet and cook stoves
on dumping site management and sculpture made of natural resources
The main training programmae was held in Siem Reap and started with a memorable bike ride around Angkor Wat to raise awareness on environmental protection and climate change. 60 YPD members were cycling as a group with t-shirt and hats. Let’s Beat the heat all together! After so much exercice, we all could relax our legs listening to presentation on climate change and global warming, improved lao stoves, sculpture workshop…
But not very long… why? because all participants had to prepare and rehearse its performance (dancing, singing…) for the cultural show to take place on the final day of the training in Phnom Penh. This was at the same time a fundraising and an intercultural event open for public. About 100 people came to see the show. Great success!
The YPD network thanks a lot ASEF for its support for this programme.
This programme was supported by the Asian-Europe Foundation (ASEF)

The 5th annual YPD training program themed “Enterprise and Innovation for Environment – Capacity building for Asia-Europe youth on Sustainable Development” was organized by the Young People for Development in Cambodia (YPDC). Cambodia was honour to host this event, since it won through an election process among the 11 participating countries in the 4th annual YPD training program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2006.
YPD Cambodia was registered as a local NGO in April 2007 with the objective of bringing young people together toward sustainable socio-economic development in Cambodia.
Cambodian youth involvement in intercultural activities is rare due to lack of education, accessibility and networking to initiate them with new ideas. Cambodia remains the least developed country in the region and needs help in all sectors; yet, there are best practices and experiences of interest to learn from, such as companies that successfully recycle wastes into valuable or fashionable products, tourism and renewable energy in Angkor Wat, and fair trade, etc.
Thought that there were several of interests to learn from Cambodia, hence the training’s was token place in three different places in Phnom Penh, Kampong Chhnang and Siem Reap which all are the good examples where many sustainable development projects have been implemented. Participants were asked to arrive in Phnom Penh on the 14th July for the welcoming dinner and were introduced to YPD. On the 15th the group were divided into 3 immersion teams to go for field visiting (immersion program). Participants then spent the next five days and four nights in Siem Reap for the class session, group discussions, cultural awareness program at Angkor Wat and the Bike Ride event to raise publicity awareness on Climate Change. The detail of training program in Annex A .
The training‘s objectives were to:
- Strengthen the network of young people involved in development issues among the participating countries;
- Build solidarity through intercultural awareness and cultural show;
- Capacity building for young people on sustainable development;
- Raise awareness about global environmental issues and equip all participants with innovative ideas of enterprise and environmental protection to launch in their home countries.
In line with these objectives, the training programme consists
- Field visits (to project sites),
- Conferences and workshops,
- Brainstorming and
- Practical training-the participants were taught to make a solar stove,
- Cultural show & Fair trade event,
- A bike ride to raise awareness on climate change issues.
Participants were divided to three different groups for their immersion programme, the group was mixed by countries in order to let them have an interaction and getting to know each other before the training get started. The immersion program (field visit) was conducted at three different areas:
- Renewable energy project (Kampong Chhnang Province),
- Energy saving stove & Char-briquette (Phnom Penh),
- Visiting sculpture workshop& dump site (Phnom Penh).
In class training session was from 17th evening to 19th July and it consists of six sessions: Climate change, Renewable energy (Biofuel), New Lao stove: micro finance and Enterprise, Sculpture, Solar stove and Char-briquette which equipped all the participants with an innovative idea for running an enterprise meanwhile addressing the preservative concept for the environment.
In order to put it into practice in different ASEM countries, two important activities for participant expressed their idea of interest and team work practices were implemented including:
- Group discussion on the topic on “How do we promote the issues relating to climate change?” (Annex B)
- Team work to make solar stove
A bike ride was a great event with co-organized by Apsara Authority and Siem Reap Governor Office. The bike ride aimed to raise the publicity awareness on climate change. Fifty one (51) participants were cycling with the electric bike around the small round of Angkor Wat area. During the cycling each of them wore the t-shirt written the slogan “Beat the heat!” and many words on how to against the climate change issues and also wore a hate written about climate change message in English and Khmer language. In the afternoon of the bike ride’s day all participants allowed to do individual visit at Angkor Wat temple and other temple according to the time available for them in order to learn about the Khmer culture and visit the world heritage during their stay in Siem Reap
Each YPD Representative from – Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, Laos and participants from Holland, Sweden, England were asked to send the country report including the future activities after participated the YPD07 training programme to the International Coordinator Mr Ruben Mahendran.
The training programme ended up with the wonderful culture show event at the local café restaurant named Gasolina located in Phnom Penh. The event was included the fair trade event for each local team who wanted to promote their local product and to fund local team activities. Over one hundred and seventy tickets were sold to Cambodian and Foreigner visitors. The funding raised from this event was donated to YPD Cambodia toward local community projects such as environmental education program, supporting an orphanage children center and micro finance on New Lao Stove and so on.
Press release through online newspaper named Lepetitjournal was published on 27 July 2007 in French which described what the activities that YPD have been achieved and about the YPD07 event. This newspaper is read about 1900 readers in France. (Annex C an article written by Ms. Anne Broggi (www.lepetitjournal.com Cambodge) Friday 27 July 2007.
